Max Scherzer tied a MLB record with 20 strikeouts in a 9-inning game, as Scherzer and the Nationals defeated the pitcher's former team, the Detroit Tigers, 3-2. Scherzer struck out the side in the 2nd, 3rd and 8th innings, and had a chance to break the all-time record in the 9th, but James McCann grounded into a force out to end the game. Scherzer threw 119 pitches, and 96 were strikes. He also gave up 2 solo home runs and worked out of a jam in the 7th inning. With runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, Scherzer struck out McCann and Anthony Gose to end the inning.
