FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

It looked like a terrible disaster playing out at a Mid-Michigan airport on Wednesday, but thankfully it was only a drill.

First responders from several organizations took part in the live disaster drill at Bishop International Airport. It gave them first-hand experience dealing with sudden tragedy.

"When the flames started, everybody started screaming and wanting help. They started shouting 'where is my family,'" said Emily Harper, medical student.

Smoke and flames billowed out of an airplane. Harper was there playing the part of a plane crash survivor.

"We go with out school so we can see how first responders respond. So I can see how they help everyone," Harper said.

Daniel Owen, with Bishop Airport, said the drill is important because it will help all departments communicate better in case of a crash landing or even things that happen more often.

"Whether it's a fire or emergency with the police department or even a casualty on the roads with a car accident, communication does always seem to be an issue. Now we get the opportunity to work together to see what works, what doesn't and we critique it after," Owen said.

Emergency crews treated the scene like it was a real one with stretchers, ambulances and they even took victims to the hospital.

Gabbie Perez was playing a victim for her medical class and she said the scene was intense.

"It was interesting watching them come in, put the fire out. And the screaming sounded so real and it encouraged people to get into their role they were supposed to play," Perez said.

Harper said she learned a lot and it will help her as she pursues her dreams in the medical field.

"For me I definitely got bloody and dressed up for it and I thought it was really cool," she said.
