They were off to the races at a Mid-Michigan track meet last week.

The competition was intense, but the finish was one fantastic moment.

On the surface it may look like an ordinary middle school track meet, but it was anything but ordinary for 13-year-old Lucas Jackett. Jackett is a student at Millington Middle School.

Lucas' mother said her son has Down syndrome and is still riding high from last week's victory.

"He was really proud of himself and he's talking about it still," she said.

Lucas' track coach Jason Germain said it was a proud moment for everyone involved.

"Before the meet I had asked the coaches from Frankenmuth and Bridgeport if they would be will to see if they had any track athletes that would race our track superstar Lucas Jackett," Germain said.

In an amazing show of sportsmanship, coaches and athletes from three Mid-Michigan school districts recruited their best sprinters to race Lucas for the third time this year. After the meet ended runners from Frankenmuth, Bridgeport and Millington lined up for the special race against the defending champion - Lucas.

"Oh he's fast. He'll tell you he's fast too. He's not shy about telling you how fast he is," Germain said.

Lucas was also not shy about showing the crowd how fast he really is.

As for those running against Lucas, technically they may have lost the race but they said they still feel like winners.

"It made me feel really good. My mom raised me to let people have their moment," said X'Zavier Head, student at Adkins Middle School.

In the spirit of being a good sport and after winning for the third time in a row, Lucas insists the race was really a win for everyone.

"I just want to say thank you from my family," he said.
