Lawsuit seeks quicker action on clean Flint drinking water

Posted: Updated:

A federal judge is being asked to force state and city officials to move more quickly in bringing clean drinking water to Flint homes.

Arguments were heard Friday in U.S. District Court in Detroit in a lawsuit filed by Flint residents and civil rights groups.

They want the state and city to better comply with the federal Safe Drinking Water Act and replace water lines that are leaching lead into some homes and businesses.

State and city officials want the lawsuit dismissed and say efforts already are underway to fix the problem.

Flint was under state management when it switched from Detroit's water system in 2014 to the Flint River to save money. The river water was not treated with anti-corrosive chemicals, causing lead to leach from old water lines.
