ISABELLA COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A man was injured and his dog died after they were involved in a vehicle accident.

Dan Lee, 65, of Remus was stopped on M-20, near St. Andrews Drive, behind a Mt. Pleasant School bus shortly before 3:20 p.m. on Friday.

Robert Patterson, 60, of Mt. Pleasant, was looking down and did not see the other vehicles had stopped, according to the Isabella County Sheriff's Department.

Patterson struck Lee's vehicle, causing him to go off the road and into a nearby residence. The house received minor damage, the sheriff's department said.

Lee's dog was in the vehicle at the time of the accident. Bystanders took his dog to a veterinarian clinic, but he died on the way there, the department said.

Lee was transported to McLaren for treatment of his injuries. Patterson refused treatment.

Deputies said Patterson had been looking at or moving papers in his vehicle at the time of the accident, which remains under investigation.
