DEARBORN, Mich. (AP) -

A family photo, heirloom, toy or other memento brought to the United States by Syrian and Iraqi refugees will be the focus of an exhibition at the Arab American National Museum.

"What We Carried: Fragments from the Cradle of Civilization" debuts June 4 at the museum in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn. The work of photographer Jim Lommasson features 85 images as well as the objects' stories.

The exhibition is an ongoing project weaved through the experiences of refugees in Dearborn, Chicago, Boston, San Diego, Los Angeles and Portland, Oregon.

Lommasson says in a release he aims to "break down stereotypes" and "help to build bridges." He adds the exhibition underscores all the refugees left behind, such as homes, friends, families, careers and cultures.

The exhibit ends Oct. 23.
