SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

The lights will shine a little brighter at a Mid-Michigan veteran's plaza.

Members of IBEW Local 557 turned out at Hoyt Park on Tuesday to do electrical work. It's an annual event which is beneficial to union apprentices.

"We like to get our apprentices involved in the community at an early age. I think it really helps to have that community atmosphere, plus they get to learn something while thy're out here. This isn't the type of work we do every day," said Russ Combs, with IBEW Local 557.

Howard Revard is one of those apprentices.

"I think it's very exciting and I think we have a bright future ahead of us. And I think there are a lot of great things that are going to come this area with our local union," Revard said.

A couple of other union members from Flint came to help out and guide the apprentices.

"As part of the students curriculum they not only have to do class time, but they also have to do hands on work in order to become journeymen," said Rick Mason, with Local 948.

The volunteers who are in charge of the plaza make sure it looks good. They are happy the other volunteers showed up on Tuesday to do the electrical work.

"This is my passion. I love having these people out here doing the work and making this a beautiful place," said Steve Brown, with Saginaw County Veteran's Memorial plaza.

A retired electrician who volunteered to install lights at the park 10 years ago is proud of the young guys stepping up and helping out.

"It's wonderful today that these young people are coming down and working their butts off to make the whole plaza much more user friendly," said John Clemens, retired electrician.
