Historic Bearinger Building for sale

Posted: Updated:

The city of Saginaw is looking to sell the historic Bearinger Building.

"The SEDC does not have the authority or the dollars to demolish it. We don't have the authority or dollars to develop it outselves," said Bill Scharffe, chairman of Saginaw Economic Development Corporation.

The SEDC owns the property and has put it up for sale. It's listed on Century 21's website for $108,000.

Scharffe said there's been interest in purchasing the building.

"In order to buy it the prospective buyer would have to have the resources to do something constructive with it," Scharffe said.

The structure has more than $57,000 square feet of space. It's six stories tall with two elevators and an atrium going from the first to the sixth floor. It had a new roof installed in 2013.

The SEDC has goals for a potential buyer. They want to see development of the Bearinger in one or more these areas: retail use, tourism or business activity, cultural arts, corporate headquarters, research and development, high technology growth business.

The building has been vacant for years.

Scharffe said another option might be transferring the structure to the county land bank, but the life-long Saginaw resident is hopeful a developer can come along and breathe life into the dormant building.

"If this building could be rehabbed into an entertainment or commercial or even residential use, it would be real boon to downtown Saginaw," Scharffe said.
