BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A new report on public pools is warning parents to do their research before taking kids for a swim.

The Centers for Disease Control tested more than 48,000 public places where people swim in five states. They found about 80 percent of the pools had at least one safety violation.

While none of those tested were in Michigan, it brings an issue to light as we head into the summer months.

"We are really looking forward to the summer swimming season," said Cristen Gignac, recreation and facilities director of Bay County.

She oversees the public pool at the community center in Bay City.

"We have 12 to 14 lifeguards on every day. We do swim lessons. We have a certified pool operator that checks all the chemicals and our local health department comes in and does a weekly sample to make sure our water is safe for swimming. We also surround our pool with an eight to 10 foot fence to make sure that when that pool is not open everybody is staying out," Gignac said.

The 444,000 gallon pool isn't ready to open yet. That will happen later in June.

In the meantime, county officials have tips to keep you and your family safe while in the water.

"Parents making sure their children have swim lessons is important. Just so they're comfortable in the water. Following our rules, such as no running on the deck, to make sure nobody slips and falls is important. And just making sure they have a swim buddy is always a good idea," Gignac said.

She said there hasn't been an incident at the pool in decades. With the safety measures that are in place she doesn't see that changing this year.

"I just hope we have a great warm summer," Gignac said.
