Jury duty scam targets Mid-Michigan

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Mid-Michigan residents are being warned, don't believe everything you're told on the phone. The Seventh Judicial Circuit Court in Genesee County reports numerous complaints of a jury scam targeting the area.

In a release the court issued this morning it details how a scam artist calls residents with a warning they've missed jury duty and face a fine. The caller then threatens the person at the other end of the phone to pay a penalty immediately or face the possibility of arrest. The court says, it's all a lie.

If this happens to you court officials say, don't believe what they tell you and most of all, don't agree to send them any money or you'll never see it again. Instead, write down as much information as you can get from the caller and immediately contact your local police department.

The Seventh Judicial Circuit Court says potential jurors will always receive official notices by mail, never over the phone. And, Chief Judge Richard Yuille adds, no court employee would ever threaten a citizen under any circumstances.

If you have questions, call the Jury Board in Genesee County at (810) 257-3285.
