BIRMINGHAM, AL (WBRC) -

Now that Donald Trump has virtually wrapped up the Republican Party’s nomination by winning the number of delegates necessary, talk is increasing about who he is going to choose as a running mate and Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions’ name keeps coming up.

Alabama Representative Jim Carns says US Senator Jeff Session is a serious contender for the vice president's spot.

"I'm a big fan for Jeff Sessions, as most Alabamans are. He could go to this VP. He could go to the attorney general. He could go to the Supreme Court. He could go anywhere in the cabinet," Carns said.

Carns said Trump likes Sessions’ stand on Homeland Security and immigration. But the Trump delegate is not expecting his candidate to tip his hand anytime soon.

"I don't think Trump is going to let anybody know who is vice president is until we go to Cleveland and he is going to announce it there that is a really big thing that happens," Carns said.

Carns and other Alabama delegates for Trump believe Sessions would be a big hit.

They would hate losing him in the Senate but if it happens it would be up to Governor Bentley to name a successor until the next election cycle in two years.
