FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -

As we kick off the unofficial start of summer with Memorial Day weekend, summer road trips are starting to dominate the minds of folks looking to get away for a while.

The popular “Pure Michigan” campaign is celebrating its 10-year anniversary.

“Pure Michigan has such a great presence in terms of social media throughout the country and they’re probably the biggest in the U.S. in terms of social media presence,” said Dave Serino, founder of TwoSix Digital.

Using social media, Serino has helped some of our state’s travel professionals attract more tourists and promote Michigan’s hot spots.

“How can you leverage social media to promote travel and tourism in the state of Michigan? So we’re taking people through everything like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest,” Serino said.

“We find social media really important to our campaign strategy and the Pure Michigan partnership with TwoSix Digital. It's just really important to stay in front of people and having our visitors on social media tell the story for us,” said Christine Bierlein with the Frankenmuth Convention and Visitor’s Bureau.

Bierlein said encouraging visitors to share their vacation pictures on social media plays a big part to attract more people to Michigan's Little Bavaria.

“Nobody tells the story of our town better than our visitors,” Bierlein said. “So it comes from a more authentic place when they explain it that way, especially though photos. A photo is worth a thousand words and we definitely abide by that in Frankenmuth and we appreciate our fans and the support that they give us.”

Travel professionals are using social media to promote tourism in the state but so are we at TV5 with our new Pure Michigan reports.

This summer stay with TV5 for an inside look at some of Michigan's well-known travel destinations and emerging hot spots.

Join us on our journey to wineries, breweries, recreational trails, foodie destinations and more.
