Fight the bite during Memorial Day weekend

LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

Summer weather means it’s time to protect yourself from those pesky mosquitoes and ticks.

Health officials said the best way to protect your family from mosquito-borne illness is to prevent the bites altogether.

“As we spend more time outdoors, it’s important to remember that a single bite from an infected mosquito can have serious health consequences,” said Dr. Eden Wells, chief medical executive for the Michigan Departments of Health and Human Services.

Mosquitoes can carry illnesses such as West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis. Officials say preventing mosquito-borne illnesses is as easy as following these simple steps:

  • Avoid mosquito bites by using repellents
  • Mosquito-proof homes by fixing window and door screens
  • Help your community by reporting dead birds
  • Vaccinate horses against WNV and EEE virus
  • Pregnant women should not travel to areas with active Zika

Ticks can also carry Lyme disease and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. Many diseases have similar symptoms. Health officials said you should see your doctor if you develop signs of illness such as a fever, body aches, and/or rash after bitten by a tick.

You can prevent tick bites by:

  • Avoiding tick-infested areas
  • Using insect repellent
  • Bathing or showering after coming in doors
  • Performing daily tick checks
