MINNEAPOLIS (WNEM) -

It's a benefit many full-time workers take for granted, but not everyone gets paid sick leave.

On Friday, Minneapolis became the first city in the Midwest to require, practically all businesses provide paid time off.

The rule impacts workers at businesses with six or more employees who works at least 80 hours a year.

Workers may earn up to 48 hours of paid sick leave per year at a rate of one hour per every 30 hours worked. They can use the time for illness, mental health or care for their family.

The rule takes effect July 2017.
