SAGINAW COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

With the warm weather and long, holiday weekend many will visit the Saginaw Valley Rail Trail for some hiking, biking or just walking through nature and police plan to keep it quiet and safe.

Sheri Mayer is one of many that will have company as police step up patrols.

Deputies will join them on the 9-mile stretch of pavement surrounded by nature leading into St. Charles to help keep everyone's experience a safe one.

Mayer is glad to see them and remembers a time when she could've used a little help dealing with a few people during her ride.

"They were parked on one of those benches and they started meowing at me,” said Mayer. “So I felt a bit intimidated and if I wasn't going fast enough I would've been scared."

Mayer said that encounter is the only one she's had here. Other trail users call this a safe place but welcome the watchful eye of law enforcement.

O in charge of maintaining the trail also said they're glad to see the additional police presence.

"Our trail the Saginaw Valley Rail Trail gets utilized by tens of thousands of people, so certainly to have some sheriff's out her patrolling, adding a little bit of extra safety to that mix, we're excited about it,” said Parks and Recreation Director Brian Lechel.

Lechel said the sheriff's department is taking a pro-active approach when it comes to protecting everyone using the trail.

“Some minor incidents here and there but nothing major that's kind of sparking this,” Lechel said.

Mayer said she'll continue to log miles on her bike and expects to see lots of people doing the same, especially with law enforcement around.

"I hope it brings more people out here because it's a beautiful rail trail,” she said.
