A hockey player is recognized for his efforts to create a lasting impact on Mid-Michigan and it was all in the name of helping children.

Over the weekend, the Canadian Hockey League named former Saginaw Spirit Defenseman Will Petschenig the Weather Windows Humanitarian of the Year.

Petschenig and Spirit staff member Charley Porter created a special program for children that have lost a parent. Through “A Heart like Mine” they’ve formed friendships with dozens of kids known as “Will’s Warriors.”

Earlier this month, the Ontario Hockey League also named Petschenig its Humanitarian of the Year.
