Thousands hit the highway to celebrate Memorial Day weekend

MICHIGAN, (WNEM) -

Every year, thousands of Michigan travelers head "up north" for the holiday weekend and to get there they take I-75 despite many challenges.

Brenda Pope is spending her Memorial Day weekend in Frankenmuth. She said the traffic getting her from the Detroit area has been busy, but worth it.

“It's a nice drive you just go slow and enjoy the drive. It's just nice to get away from the city and nice easy drive up north,” Pope said.

Even with backups for miles this weekend, many said it’s just something they’re used to.

“The traffic, eh, doesn't bother us a bit. We just blend right in,” Wayne Miller said.

Paying a little more at the pump also didn’t stop folks from their weekend plans.

“Well, with the gas prices I’m happy to pull off here and see it’s a dime lower than most places,” Miller said.

One woman and her family even decided to beat the rush and head in the opposite direction.
