FREELAND, MI (WNEM) -

Three people are alive after what could have been their final flight.

The battered plane flipped over onto its top at the MBS International Airport. Its three occupants were emotionally shaken but otherwise uninjured.

It’s a stark reminder the danger of flying doesn’t end on the ground.

"It was a bad accident. We're lucky there were no injuries,” Jeff Nagel said. “Talked to all of the passengers and pilot, they seemed in good spirits for everything they’ve been through.”

The crash happened around 10 a.m. Monday morning. The single-engine Cessna 170 was taxiing slowly just after landing. The cause was possibly mechanical but still undetermined.

The FAA later cleared the damaged plane to be moved from the runway that was temporarily closed.

Every three years, personnel have a major training exercise on how to handle emergencies here at MBS. Coincidentally, the most recent one was just last month.

"We've had incidents upon landing in the past. Our crews are very dedicated. They were on scene, in a very timely fashion, handled it very professionally. I was impressed with the job our fire crews did,” Nagel said.

It's long been said a good landing is one that can be walked away from. By that standard at least, even this was a good landing.
