Runners line up in memory of those who made ultimate sacrifice

Memorial Day celebrations came in many forms and in Burton that included a 5K run.

Hundreds of runners lined up at Atherton High School on Monday. The purpose is to commemorate the men and women who died while in military service, support schools by providing supplies to disadvantaged children and promote a healthy lifestyle in the City of Burton.

Jennie Walker is from Clio and she had a couple of reasons for running the race.

“I do it mostly for fitness but to remember everyone that we’ve lost over the memorial season,” Walker said.

This isn’t just a big deal for the participants. A lot of folks show up just to watch.

Greg Hynes and his faithful companion were there to support a couple of people.

“I’m here to support my girlfriend who’s walking and her friend out there. Waiting for them to finish,” Hynes said.

The same with Steve Hendershott from Ortonville, who was there for his wife.

“I think it’s wonderful. We just heard about it this year and it’s wonderful,” he said.

Walker parted the race with some good advice.

“Remember everybody that we’ve lost,” she said.
