SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Thousands dressed in red, white and blue waved American flags at the Saginaw Memorial Day parade.

The annual parade ended at Hoyt Park with a special ceremony.

Fred Medel is a Vietnam veteran. Today, he remembers several friends and family members who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

“I’ve lost personally a father, two brothers and cousins. A lot of cousins that are here,” Medel said.

People at the parade said this is how the holiday should be celebrated – honoring those who gave their lives for our country.

“Every year me and my mom and my family, we always come out here. We love to honor the veterans for what they’ve done. They allowed us to have our freedom and we want to just pay our respects,”

Medel said seeing so many people in our community say thank you to our American heroes tugs at his heartstrings.

“If I could show you my heart, it makes my heart feel so huge and I feel so appreciated. We were pretty much outcast when we came back from Nam and to have all of this is tremendous,” he said.
