FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

A memorial celebration in Genesee County took a more somber tone earlier Monday as many gathered to remember and honor military members.

The ceremonies at McFarlan Park were are minder of the patriotic spirit that is alive and well in Flint.

With the mayor and other elected officials on hand, it demonstrated the pride of a nation, a city and a state by saluting the honor of heroes who have passed on.

“The stars and stripes of the red, white and blue - that what this day all about, to honor these names that paid the ultimate sacrifice,” said Bill Gramer, a retired Navy veteran.

It’s a sacrifice that Carol Horvath knows all too well.

She lost her brother in Vietnam, and although he is no longer with us, his memory and name is on full display for all to see at McFarlan Park.

“It's just wonderful. Hardly a dry eye and I love to hear all the stories of other people who served or who've lost someone or people that find the importance of what today really means,” she said.
