May brings rainfall deficits to Saginaw, Flint

Posted: Updated:

The month of May has certainly ended on a beautiful, summer-like note. An ending that brought relief to many Michiganders who wondered if warmer temperatures would ever arrive after snowflakes fell in the middle of the month.

While many may not be complaining about the nice, fairly rain-free weather to end the month, those who have agricultural interests certainly wouldn't mind a good soaking.

With the calendar flipping over to June tomorrow, and no rain in the forecast today, we can take a look at how we ended up for monthly rainfall totals around the area.

  • Note: With one day of May remaining, the comparisons to normal will change slightly with the final NWS Climate Report becoming available tomorrow.

May 2016 Monthly Rainfall Totals (Compared To Normal)

  • Saginaw:
    • 2.11 inches (1.17 inches below average)
  • Flint
    • 1.72 inches (1.26 inches below average)
  • Houghton Lake
    • 4.08 inches (1.36 inches above average)

There's no question both the Saginaw and Flint areas could use the rain with both locations checking in over an inch below our normal May rainfall. That goes for many areas around Mid-Michigan too, as these are only the official National Weather Service climate stations.

While Houghton Lake is checking in with an inch above-average rainfall, that total was helped greatly by thunderstorms that moved through the area last Wednesday. The total rainfall for that day actually set the daily rainfall record for Houghton Lake, with a daily total of 2.45 inches. Without that good soaking, it's safe to say they would be in the same boat as Saginaw and Flint.

Let's face it, the gorgeous conditions we've enjoyed over the last few weeks make it hard to complain. This is especially true with the beautiful spring and summers Michigan provides. But every once in awhile, let's hope for a little rain. Our gardens need it!
