Mid-Michigan lawmaker hopes to make college affordable

LANSING, MI (WNEM) -

A prominent Michigan Democrat in the state legislature seeks to make costly higher education within reach of many Flint residents.

Senator Jim Ananich has introduced a bill that would designate the Vehicle City a 'Promise Zone'. Based on a successful model in Kalamazoo, Senate Bill 999 allows local communities to pool resources and use tax increment financing, or TIF, to help all students afford a college education. If passed, this 'TIF' model would allow Flint to set aside future property tax revenues into a fund expressly aimed at qualifying students who otherwise couldn't pay for higher education on their own.

"In the wake of the Flint water crisis, it's our responsibility to ensure Flint's children have every opportunity to succeed," Ananich said in a release.

The Senator's 'Promise Zone' bill has been referred to a legislative committee for review.
