SANFORD, MI (WNEM) -

A Mid-Michigan homeowner is taking advantage of federal tax incentives to lower his home's energy bills.

He is one of the first in his area to make the improvements.

Chris Streeter had solar panels installed at his Sanford house on Tuesday.

"I think it's environmentally conscious and to see a zero on our electrical bill will be really nice too," Streeter said.

Adam Harris, CEO of the Green Panel, installed the solar panels.

"Panels are made here in Michigan by Suniva, so it's a Michigan initiative," Harris said.

Harris said a federal tax credit covers 30 percent of the installation costs for homeowners and there are several ways solar panels can be set up at residents' homes.

"We can do a roof array or a ground mount system, or for a car port or awning," Harris said.

Streeter will soon get a meter that will track the energy from the solar panels and any that's left over he will sell to Consumers Energy.

"It's going to balance out or electric costs so in the end it will be $0 for electricity. In the winter we'll be using some of Consumers Energy and in the summer we'll be giving it back," Streeter said.
