One man is dead, several others are out of their home after a fire in a local downtown.

Crews were called to 112 E. Third Street in Lapeer County’s Imlay City at around 2:15 a.m. on Wednesday.

They found a building housing Ruiz’s Taqueria and apartments on fire.

While the people that lived in the apartments were able to escape, crews found a 52-year-old man unconscious on the floor of Ruiz’s.

Despite efforts to revive him, the man passed away at around 4 a.m. His name has not yet been released.

Imlay City Police tell TV5 that the fire appears to have started in the back of the business and gutted it, but a cause is still unclear.

The upper apartments were also heavily damaged by fire, water and smoke. The flames were put out at 5:52 a.m.

Red Cross is helping the three families that lived in the apartments, but it’s unclear if they will be able to return to their homes.

Imlay City Assistant Fire Chief Andrew Kustowski would like to express thanks on behalf of the Imlay City Fire Department for all the offers of assistance from agencies, community businesses and individuals.  “Fires of this nature show how a community can come together and assist our neighbors in their time of need.  In the days moving forward there will be healing and rebuilding, we ask for your prayers for our community during this time.”

Other businesses in the area are open.
