SANFORD, MI (WNEM) -

A disabled woman desperately needed help repairing a wheelchair ramp at her house.

The ramp was so dangerous she made a trip to the hospital because of its poor shape.

"I feel like a prisoner in my own house," Mae Konesko said.

Konesko lives in Midland County. She had the ramp installed about 10 years ago and it wasn't professionally done.

The whole deck outside her home in Sanford needed to be replaced. The ramp itself had broken boards and was not safe to walk on, especially for a 68-year-old woman who suffers from debilitating rheumatoid arthritis.

There was a time when Konesko fell through the ramp and an ambulance had to be called.

"All of a sudden it just gave away and down I went. Luckily, I didn't fall. I landed on my feet, but it took a couple of them to try to get me up," she said.

Senior Services of Midland fixed that portion of the ramp.

Konesko is on a fixed income due to her disability and didn't have the funds to fix the ramp.

The Midland County Habitat for Humanity stepped up to help.

"It's amazing. It's just amazing. I'm at a loss for words. I feel like I could sit here and cry," Konesko said.

The HFH saw the condition of Konesko's ramp and knew they had to do something.

Not only did they replace the ramp, but they also built Konesko a side stairway with rails.

"These people just amaze me," Konesko said.

The guy in charge of the project said it feels good to help people like Konesko.

"Everything that we do at Habitat for Humanity is really rewarding. It's great to be able to come in and make a big change and help somebody out so much," said Matt Weckesser, with Midland County's Habitat for Humanity.
