A Mid-Michigan school won $1,000 worth of new sports equipment after it won Subway's Fit for Life Challenge.

"It was very hard because everyone had to participate and they made us do a lot of stuff," said Chloe Chapman, student at Haas Elementary School in Flint.

Chapman said there were 5,000 students at 20 different elementary schools in Flint who competed.

"I love it. I mean, because we can only do so much. For them to do this for us it's quite big," said Bobby Irish, parent.

Students had to record what they ate and their activity.

The challenge limited the kid's screen time to just 20 minutes a day, but the students are happy it helped get them new sporting equipment.

Cindy Brendel, with student services, said she is proud of the students accomplishments and thinks it teaches them more than just staying healthy.

"It's just so important. It teaches our kids too that they need to give back to the community, to take care of themselves and to give back to the community. So Subway doing this for them is just phenomenal," Brendel said.

Chapman said she can't wait to get outside and start playing.

"I'm excited because now we can play with them at recess and we didn't really have a lot of balls," she said.
