State to provide supplies to Flint after fed emergency ends

Posted: Updated:

Michigan officials say they will keep providing water bottles, filters and testing-kits to residents dealing with the lead-tainted water crisis after the federal emergency declaration ends in August.

Michigan State Police Capt. Chris Kelenske said in a release Thursday the state will provide supplies until the water meets quality standards. The emergency declared by the Obama administration in January ends Aug. 14.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has been providing resources under a 75 percent federal and 25 percent state cost-sharing agreement. The state will be responsible for all costs once that declaration ends.

Scientists say Flint's water has gotten much better in recent months and is safe for hand-washing, showering and bathing. A filter should still be used for drinking and food preparation.
