BAY CITY, MI (WNEM) -

After five weeks of sailing, with 2200 nautical miles logged, the Appledore V returns to its home port of Bay City on Saturday, June 4 at about 11 a.m.  The public is invited to be on hand in Wenonah Park to welcome both crew and Tall Ship.

For the past six years the Appledore V operated in Florida. The BaySail SEA SCHOLARS team flew there on April 30, and sailed the vessel back to Bay City.

The inaugural class of SEA SCHOLARS includes students from Bullock Creek High School, Western High School, and Houghton High School.

BaySail’s SEA SCHOLARS program marries traditional sail training experience with place-based lessons in astronomy, biology, navigation, and mathematics, along with a half dozen other subjects.

In addition to completing lessons and experiments aboard the ship, the SEA SCHOLARS were required to complete assignments from their high schools as well.

Despite a few days of delay to avoid a storm, students will be back in their classrooms before the school year official ends.
