National Doughnut Day - WNEM TV 5

National Doughnut Day

Posted: Updated:

Donut lover or not, today is the day to indulge.

Friday is National Donut Day, a holiday that dates back to 1938.

That’s when the Salvation Army started it to honor the women who served donuts to troops in World War I.

Today it’s observed by taking a bite of your favorite pastry.

Many places are offering freebies. Mid-Michigan's own Cops & Doughnuts is giving away a free cake doughnut, while supplies last.

Krispy Kreme and Dunkin’ Donuts are also among the chains giving away freebies.
