SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

Federal funds are being used to help the Saginaw Fire Department save lives. A grant worth more than $58,000 is being used to purchase two sets of tools to help cut people out of damaged vehicles or other tight spaces, often referred to as the 'jaws of life'.

Details of the funding were announced Thursday by Senators Debbie Stabenow (D-Lansing), and Gary Peters (D-Bloomfield Twp).

The new 'jaws of life' are extremely powerful, compared to 26 year old equipment currently in use, according to a prepared release.
