BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

A group of sea faring students finally returned home to Mid-Michigan after a more than month long trip at sea. The high school students boarded the Tall Ship called the 'Appledore 5."

The trip was part of a program called the "Bay Sail Sea Scholars" and is designed to give students a chance to learn about navigating the seas.

"We have always dreamed of having the opportunity to send kids to sea," said Shirley Roberts, the executive director of the program.

Roberts also said the goal of the program is to teach the young sailors the connection between the ocean and the sea.

For some parents, thinking about their child being out at sea for so long was at times difficult, but that worry disappeared once they learned how much the students learned on the trip.

"Oh I cried, yep, when I saw him at the bow, he looked a lot more mature and he knew exactly what he was doing" said Jen Gibas.

The students returned just in time to join their classmates on dry land right before the school year officially ends.
