Mid-Michigan priest celebrates 60 years of service

Posted: Updated:

Finding your passion and turning it into a career is truly something special and that’s what one Mid-Michigan man has done for 60 years.

Dozens of parishioners gathered Sunday, June 6 to honor Father Joseph Schabel. He's been a staple in the Saginaw Diocese for six decades.

"I was in about thirteen different parishes over the years. I feel like for the most part they all support me,” Father Schabel said.

Kathleen Chaltraw said it was Father Joe who oversaw her wedding nearly fifty years ago.

"He was a very young priest when I got to meet him. And he is just one in a million. I've always called him Father Joe. He'll do anything for anybody and that's why he is so special,” Chaltraw said.

Why does Father Joe keep going?

It'd be easy enough to retire and step out of the limelight but it's faith in a higher power that he said keeps him going.

"I really believe there is a God and this God continues to want to make sure we don't forget what we are all about, what really matters,” Father Schabel said. “And what really matters is that we acknowledge there is a God and we have to give God all the glory otherwise we are failing as human beings."

Father Schabel said he has no plans of stopping what he is doing anytime soon.
