SAGINAW, MI (WNEM) -

A police sergeant is credited with saving the life of a newborn baby.

Police received a 911 call around 4:30 p.m. on June 4, 2016 for reports of a woman who just delivered a baby in the 1000 block of Brown Street. The caller said the baby was not breathing.

When Saginaw Police Department’s Patrol Sgt. Kelly Schmidt arrived she found a 19-year-old woman sitting on the toilet holding a lifeless newborn baby girl with the umbilical cord still attached.

Schmidt began CPR on the baby until medical personnel could arrive.

The woman and her daughter were taken to a local hospital where the newborn was placed in intensive care.

“We have taken a lot of pride in keeping our officers updated n their training. We never know when we will be able to use it,” Police Chief Bob Ruth said. “I know the family is as grateful and thankful as we are for Sgt. Schmidt’s initiative. She literally held a life in her hands and saved it.”

Police said the baby girl is recovering.
