A Mid-Michigan woman was able to connect a couple with their memories.

Mary Bovee found a flash drive outside of the Bavarian Inn in Frankenmuth on May 20. On it she found pictures of a couple and what appears to be their trip to Europe.

The pictures show Vatican City and many other landmarks taken in May of 2014.

"It was just laying there," Bovee said. "There's 300 photos of a cruise. This older couple cruised to Italy and they lost all their memories."

The couple is a man and a woman. They appear to be vacationing in Italy at the time the photos were taken. The man is wearing a hat from Asheville, North Carolina.

"I feel really sad for them. That would be heartbreaking to lose all your memories like that. You know, you spend all your time and your money to have this wonderful once in a lifetime trip and it's gone," Bovee said.

Frankenmuth is one of Mid-Michigan's biggest tourist attractions, which means the couple could be from almost anywhere.

Bovee said she would not give up hope on finding them.

"It would probably bring me to tears. It would be so neat. We'd have to go, if they're in the area, go back for sure to Frankenmuth and have a nice dinner there," Bovee said.

Bovee hoped someone recognized the people and could help her get the pictures back to them.

"If the tips that come in are good and the name is good, I can typically find the person that we're looking for," said Troy Sawade, private investigator.

Sawade has never been on a case like this before. He stopped by to try to help Bovee solve the mystery.

TV5 viewers provided tips that led to a promising lead with details similar to the unknown couple. Sawade was able to obtain cell phone numbers and tried to solve the riddle.

"Typically the databases that we use are updated nightly, where the other ones could be updated once a year," Sawade said.

After a few attempts a connection was made. The woman TV5 contacted was in Georgia. She said she was not the one in the picture. She also said her husband did not have a hat from Ashville, North Carolina as seen in the photo. While they did travel to Italy, a stop in Little Bavaria was not on their itinerary.

The phone call was a deflating moment for Bovee.

"Really disappointed. I mean, I had my fingers crossed for so long," she said.

Bovee vowed to keep trying.

"Just trying to find them. You know, I think it would be so neat," Bovee said.

As for Sawade, he said he'll stay on the case, doing what he can to bring Bovee and the mystery couple together.

"I always look forward to helping people out," he said.

They were finally able to find the couple in the photos, Dan and Meg McGrath from New Jersey.

Bovee will send the flash drive to the couple.
