EMMETT TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -

Authorities in southern Michigan say an off-duty Calhoun County sheriff's deputy fatally shot his wife and then himself in the backyard of their Emmett Township home.

Sheriff Matt Saxton on Monday identified the deputy as 43-year-old Mark Elferdink and his wife as 38-year-old Hope Elferdink.

Saxton says "it appears that Elferdink is responsible for the death of his wife and himself."

Their bodies were found about 7:50 a.m. Sunday by one of the couple's two children. Emmett Township is southwest of Battle Creek.

The Battle Creek Enquirer reports that Mark Elferdink's personal handgun was found at the scene.

Mark Elferdink had been employed with the sheriff's department for 18 years.

Saxton said the couple was divorcing.
