FRANKENMUTH, MI (WNEM) -

The Bavarian Festival, in Frankenmuth, starts its 58th year this Thursday, June 9 with the crowning of the 2016 Bavarian Princess, and opening ceremonies, including the traditional ‘tapping of the keg’.

The German tradition runs from June 9 through June 12 and features stage entertainment and periodic performances by various bands, including ‘Polka Riot’ and ‘One More Shot’.

The event starts with the crowning of the Bavarian Princess and her two court members on Thursday night, with ‘Big Money and the Sidewinders’ performing exclusively at the Coronation.

Returning again this year is a sand sculpting competition comprised of several local artists and high school art students.

Other activities include Cornhole and Euchre tournaments on Saturday and the German European Car Show.

A selection of German food offerings and BBQ chicken is available all weekend, along with a variety of beers from the Frankenmuth Brewery.

“The Bavarian Festival is a celebration of not only our German heritage, but of our Frankenmuth heritage”, says Trisha Way-Uphold, the 2016 Bavarian Festival President.
