Students learn importance of bike safety

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Witnesses say they watched a pick-up truck driving erratically before hitting a group of bicyclists, killing five and hurting four more.

The accident shocked people all across the state, especially cyclists wondering if a tragedy like this could happen to them.

Mott Community College public safety officers taught the importance of bike safety to third graders at Freeman Elementary School in Flint on Wednesday.

It’s something Nancy Metcalfe said is even more important now.

“You just never want to take for granted that vehicles can see you, you have to be alert and aware of your surrounding when on a bicycle,” Metcalfe said.

The kids said they took a lot away from the obstacle course and training session.

“To wear helmets at all times when you're on a bike,” said Jomarion Upchurch, a student.

"To stop at stop signs," said Chamya Coneily, another student.

Police have a 50-year-old west Michigan man in custody following the tragedy in Kalamazoo. Police said they will release his name after he is arraigned. That could happen as early as Thursday.
