Good Samaritans help woman after lumber spills on busy highway

Posted: Updated:

A load of lumber created a mess after spilling over a busy highway.

“I hear this big whoosh and then a loud bang,” Marj McNeil said.

The sound of a pile of wood leaving the bed of a pickup and landing on a busy highway – in the middle of rush hour. It’s what Marj McNeil experienced on Tuesday – her birthday.

She bought the lumber at a local hardware store then went south on I-675. While driving at 45 miles per hour with the tailgate down, the timber slid out.

“My heart just dropped because I thought somebody is going to get hurt picking this up and traffic was heavy,” McNeil said.

What McNeil didn’t know was help was already on the way.

“Was driving along and I saw two ladies on the side of the road with a pile of lumber in the one lane,” Kirk Histed said.

Histed was on his way home from work. He quickly pulled over and got out. Rushing to pick up the timber. Turns out he wasn't the only one willing to help.

"Yeah there was two other guys. The guy behind me had stopped and somebody had walked in from off the street from the side there somewhere. He was there for a few minutes,” Histed said.

They spent about five minutes clearing the mess out of the right lane. Despite the danger of being hit by a vehicle on the expressway, Histed said he would do it all over again.

If I see somebody that needs a hand I'll help them out whether I know them or not,” Histed said.

Turns out this was a chance meeting for Histed as he is actually good friends with McNeil. She says she's grateful to the three men who risked their lives to help someone in need.

"These three gentlemen certainly deserve a lot of credit and I really appreciate what they did,” McNeil said.
