SAGINAW TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

A moment of celebration and fun took Max Wendling's thoughts off of sadness and despair.

Seconds before, with the game tied up and his team down to its final strike, the New Lothrop junior smacked the game-winning hit advancing his team into the state semifinals.

"We went into the last inning with confidence. Told ourselves we've been in that situation before. Dug deep and got the win," Wendling said.

The young man showed courage by just suiting up. Within the last 48 hours, Wendling's team was preparing to play the game without him because on Sunday his grandfather passes away unexpectedly at the age of 67.

"We just said you can play, you don't have to. We have your back. We have a capable young man here," Wendling's coach said.

Wendling decided to play and his big hit with two outs capped an improbable six-run final inning.

"I knew my grandpa was up there kinda watching over this game the whole time and when we started that last inning I just had that feeling, something special," Wendling said.

While the Wendling family continues to mourn their loss, the New Lothrop baseball team will start to get ready for their state semifinal match-up on Friday at Michigan State University against Jackson Lumen Cristi.
