Flint native stationed in Alaska sends water home

FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

The Flint water crisis has definitely garnered its fair share of national attention. That attention has brought donations from across the country.

Now, thanks to a Flint native stationed in Alaska, one local agency has received donations from 49 of the 50 United States.

Malicia Smith is a Petty Officer 3rd Class with the U.S. Coast Guard. She decided to hold a fundraiser to help her hometown. She raised $275 which was matched by the Coast Guard's Enlisted Association's Motor City Branch, based in Detroit.

On Wednesday, June 15th, Members of the Enlisted Association will deliver water purchased with the funds raised to the Catholic Charities Center for Hope, located at 517 E. Fifth Avenue in Flint.

With this delivery, Catholic Charities will have received water or donations from every state except Hawaii.
