New Lothrop baseball honors grandpa with game winning hit

Posted: Updated:
A MOMENT OF CELEBRATION AND FUN TOOK MAX WENDLING'S THOUGHTS OFF OF SADNESS AND DESPAIR.
SECONDS BEFORE, WITH THE GAME TIED UP AND HIS TEAM DOWN TO ITS FINAL STRIKE,  THE NEW LOTHROP JUNIOR SMACKED THE GAME-WINNING HIT, ADVANCING HIS TEAM INTO THE STATE SEMIFINALS.
MAX WENDLING:  "WE WENT INTO THE LAST INNING WITH CONFIDENCE, TOLD OURSELVES WE'VE BEEN IN THAT SITUATION BEFORE. DUG DEEP AND GOT THE WIN."
THE YOUNG MAN SHOWED COURAGE BY JUST SUITING UP. WITHIN THE LAST 48 HOURS, WENDLING'S TEAM WAS PREPARING TO PLAY THE GAME WITHOUT HIM. BECAUSE ON SUNDAY, HIS GRANDFATHER PASSED AWAY UNEXPECTEDLY AT THE AGE OF 67.
BENJAMIN ALMASY: "WE JUST SAID, YOU CAN PLAY, YOU DON'T HAVE TO. WE HAVE YOUR BACK. WE HAVE A CAPABLE YOUNG MAN HERE."
BUT WENDLING DECIDED TO PLAY...AND HIS BIG HIT WITH 2 OUTS CAPPED AN IMPROBABLE 6-RUN FINAL INNING...
MAX WENDLING: "I KNEW MY GRANDPA WAS UP THERE KINDA WATCHING OVER THIS GAME THE WHOLE TIME AND WHEN WE STARTED THAT LAST INNING I JUST HAD THAT FEELING. SOMETHING SPECIAL."
STEVEN GARZA: "I SAID WORSE COMES TO WORSE WE'RE GONNA PLAY ANOTHER INNING AND A COUPLE OF GUYS SAID NO WE'RE WINNING IT RIGHT HERE AND IT'S A STORY BOOK ENDING MAX IS GONNA GET A HIT AND HE'S GONNA PULL THROUGH AND WE'RE GONNA WIN THIS GAME. I GUESS SOME WERE BELIEVERS AND I GUESS WE ALL BELIEVE NOW."
JASON FIELDER: "WHILE THE WENDLING FAMILY CONTINUES TO MOURN THEIR LOSS, THE NEW LOTHROP BASEBALL TEAM WILL START TO GET READY FOR THEIR STATE SEMIFINAL MATCHUP ON FRIDAY AT MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY AGAINST JACKSON LUMEN CRISTI. FROM SVSU, I'M JASON FIELDER FOR SPORTS XTRA."
