Authorities have arrested an armed man in rural southwestern Michigan following a standoff.

WOOD-TV reports the man barricaded himself in a home in Van Buren County on Tuesday and was under arrest early Wednesday. At several times the 41-year-old fired toward police, prompting officers to return fire.

No officers were hurt.

State police say they went to the home Tuesday morning to investigate alleged threats against an elected official and the man became upset, got a gun and fired a shot. Police say they tried to negotiate with the man during the standoff.

Police say the Van Buren County prosecutor's office authorized charges against the man of carrying of a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, assault with a dangerous weapon and reckless use of a firearm.
