ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) -

The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is receiving $17.5 million for cancer research.

School regents on Thursday approved the private gift from Madeline and Sidney Forbes, of Bloomfield Hills, as part of the university's $4 billion Victors for Michigan campaign.

The funding will create the Forbes Institute for Cancer Discovery within the school's Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The school says the goal of the Forbes Institute is to encourage the university's scientists to undertake high-risk, high-reward initiatives with the potential to drive new advances in cancer research.

University of Michigan President Mark Schlissel says the gift strengthens the school's "ability to conduct lifesaving research originating from the University of Michigan's remarkable academic breadth."

Sidney Forbes is founder of The Forbes Co., a developer, owner, and manager of luxury shopping destinations.
