Northern Michigan University officials have voted to raise undergraduate tuition rates by an average of 4.2 percent in the fall.
The Marquette school's Board of Trustees voted unanimously for the hike on Friday. The action raises undergraduate rates by an average of $203 per semester to $5,043.
The increase meets the state's 4.2 percent cap instituted by state lawmakers. Schools that go over the cap could lose some state aid dollars.
The board also changed from a flat-rate tuition program to one with an upper and lower division. Undergraduate students in the lower division -- those with fewer than 56 credits -- will see a $74 per-semester increase and those in the upper division a $332 per-semester increase.
