SHIELDS, MI (WNEM) -

A local restaurant owner is hoping to give back to veterans struggling to make ends meet.

"We all need to step up to the plate and help the ones that are down and out," said Vicki Wilson, owner of Sporty's Wing Shack in Saginaw County.

She said her restaurant is up to bat and giving back. They're hosting the first annual 1 percent Run Food Pantry for Veterans.

"We are ecstatic. We have put a lot of work and effort into this and we hope it really helps the food pantry," Wilson said.

She said bikers should rev up their bikes for the event on June 25. The run, which is actually a motorcycle ride, will have four stops and it starts and ends at Sporty's.

Lisa Fialkowski is looking forward to the event.

"It's nice that we are a newer restaurant in Shields and we just want everybody to know that we are here and we are supporting the locals. Ya know, they are out there putting their lives on the line and all they are asking for is a little bit of help," said Fialkowski, Sporty's manager.

The run is $20 a person and if you don't have a bike there will be a party bus to tag along on.

Fialkowski said you can also participate in a 50/50 raffle, silent auction and get some good barbecue. All the donations made will go right back to the community. It will help veterans get anything from laundry detergent to chicken noodle soup.

Judy Adams runs the food pantry at Henry Browne Airport and she said she can't wait for the event.

"This is awesome. We have never had a motorcycle run done as a fundraiser for us and I so love a business that does this for our veterans," Adams said.

Wilson said she hopes this is just the first run out of many at Sporty's.

"We are getting out feet wet this year. We are planning on sticking with the veteran's food pantry and we are hoping it just grows and we become big and make more and more funds for them," Wilson said.
