BAY COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Relief is in sight for residents at a local senior citizens living center plagued by elevator issues.

The center has two elevators. One of them was out of service for months and then the other one broke down, leaving residents to use the stairs at the high rise complex.

It appears at least one of the elevators is running again at Maplewood Manor.

"We are so happy that the big one is working," said Kay Moore, resident.

A state inspector issued a temporary permit allowing use of the elevator. However, Moore said the job isn't finished yet.

"We need that little one fixed too because it needs to get done," Moore said.

TV5 learned a part was ordered to fix the other elevator.

"When I talked to the elevator service contractor this afternoon he assured me that both of the cars will be operational after we get the small car up and running too. They'll still need to have the state inspection for final certification, but they will allow us to run both of them until we get that inspection," said Doug Rise, with the Bay City Housing Commission.

Rise doesn't know when that inspection will take place. He said until then the elevators will run.

Meanwhile, Moore is optimistic she won't be taking the stairs again anytime soon.

"It's working and we're using it. So hopefully nothing is going to happen to us if we ride it, but I'm looking forward to getting the other one done," Moore said.
