Sheriff's department search for persons of interest in stolen vehicles case

ISABELLA COUNTY, MI (WNEM) -

Police have arrested one person and are searching for other persons of interest in related to several stolen vehicles.

The vehicles were stolen from a garage in Shepherd. That's in Isabella County.

The Isabella County Sheriff's Department responded to a call about a vehicle fire on June 9. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames when the deputies arrived.

Upon investigation it was discovered the vehicle has bee stolen from a dealership in Mt. Pleasant, but was left at the garage in Shepherd for repairs, the sheriff's department said.

Another vehicle, a Jeep, was reported stolen from that same garage on June 15. That vehicle was not located until June 18.

On June 17 a deputy was patrolling the parking lot of the garage when he saw two men attempting to hot hire a vehicle, the department said.

One of the men ran from the vehicle into a field and the other man stayed in the vehicle. The second man was arrested.

After interviewing the man who was arrested, deputies discovered the Jeep in a wooded area.

The sheriff's department said there are several persons of interest in the case and not all of the suspects have been arrested.

Benjamin Benchley, 17, of Shepherd was arrested and arraigned in connection to the case.

Warrants have been requested on several other suspects, the Isabella County Sheriff's Department said.
