YPSILANTI, MI (AP) -

Eastern Michigan University regents have approved a 10-year deal with a private company to provide residential, retail and catering food services to the Ypsilanti school.

The agreement with Chartwells Higher Education was voted on Tuesday and takes effect July 1.

Eastern Michigan also will renovate and remodel its dining facilities.

The deal calls for current workers at the school to remain Eastern Michigan employees.

Last week, a group of students, faculty and workers urged the university and its board to reject the plan.

Regents also on Tuesday approved a three-year agreement with the school's maintenance and food service workers. That contract starts July 1 and calls for a 2-percent pay increase during the first two years and a 1-percent increase in the third year.
