CARROLLTON, MI (WNEM) -

They've called it home for half a century, but as health issues mounted, the work on their home did too.

The couple is willing to pay it forward if someone comes to give them a helping hand.

Arthur and Bertha Beck have a leaky roof, mold in the attic and an unsafe porch.

"I fell quite a few times on this porch and my roof is leaking and I've got spots on my ceiling," Arthur Beck said.

Bertha Beck said she just got out of the hospital and her husband has had multiple surgeries that make it difficult for him to get around. The couple is in need of a new roof and concrete work on their porch.

They've been married for more than 50 years and are on a fixed income and cannot afford the expensive repairs.

"We don't have that much money. Sometimes after we pay our bills every month, we only have $50 to go buy groceries," Arthur Beck said.

The Becks said they have purchased some of the material to make the repairs and they are just hoping to get a helping hand so they called the TV5 Rescue Squad.

Bertha Beck said if someone came out to help she would return the favor.

"We would go help them. We can help mow grass, pull weeds. We can do other things to help other people," Bertha Beck said.

She said they have lived in their Carrollton home for nearly 40 years and don't want to see it fall into disrepair.

She said she is afraid the mold will continue to spread.

"He already has asbestos in his lungs and that can cause pneumonia," Bertha Beck said.
